Employer Costs

What you cost your employer. Salary sacrifice saves them NI too, which is handy to know if you're asking them to set up a scheme.

Employer NI savings assume you pay employer NI. If you claim the Employment Allowance and your NI bill is covered by it, the real saving may be lower or nil.

What the terms mean

Gross pay

Your pay before tax, NI, student loan and pension come off. If you use salary sacrifice, it's your salary after the sacrifice has been taken out.

Take-home pay

What actually lands in your bank account each month after all the deductions.

Salary sacrifice

You give up part of your salary in exchange for a benefit, like extra pension or a bike. It comes off before tax and NI, so your take-home falls by less than the amount you sacrifice. Your employer saves NI on it too.

Workplace pension

Worked out on qualifying earnings (between £6,240 and £50,270 a year) using the relief at source method. You pay 80% of your contribution from take-home pay and your pension provider claims the other 20% from HMRC. The calculator starts at the auto-enrolment minimums of 5% from you and 3% from your employer. Some employers base pension on your salary before sacrifice so your pension doesn't shrink. Untick that box to see the legal minimum on pay after sacrifice, and check with your employer which one they use. Any pension salary sacrifice you add is shown as an extra contribution on top of these.

Employer costs

What you cost your employer in total: your gross pay, plus employer NI (15% on earnings over £5,000), employer pension and any salary sacrifice benefits.

National Minimum Wage

Salary sacrifice can't take your pay below the National Minimum Wage. Your employer has to check this before agreeing to a scheme.

Thresholds and assumptions

Figures assume this is your only job and use the full 2026/27 tax, NI, student loan and pension thresholds for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scottish tax codes aren't covered. You can see the official rates and thresholds on GOV.UK.
